Meet Leechbot. Inspired by the stick-and-move motion of leeches, Leechbot is an air-powered robot that could expand the mobility and range of motion of soft machines. Leechbot’s body is made entirely of silicone rubber and is built in three parts. The central structure features three chambers. Varying the pressure in these chambers enables Leechbot to crawl and turn left and right. Suction cups at either end anchor the robot in position, and ankle-like structures allow for vertical and horizontal maneuvering. Together, these design features enable Leechbot to squirm across flat surfaces or move across uneven terrain, including over gaps. This unique design could inspire new ways of making soft robots propel across different environments.
