On September 12, 2018, AJE and Research Square hosted a joint multi-session conference at their headquarters in Durham, North Carolina, USA as part of Peer Review Week, an annual event in scholarly publishing. Peer Review Week 2018’s theme focused on Diversity and Inclusion within academia, peer review, and research publication.
Attendees had the option to participate in person or virtually via web broadcast. The conference hosted industry experts from major publishers and societies such as Cambridge University Press, Wiley, and the American Chemical Society, as well as the Workplace Equity Project, and Research Square. The content of the program focused on issues of diversity in academia and scholarly publishing, as well as challenges in peer review and innovations as possible solutions. Participants learned about new initiatives to improve the peer review process as part of the Publisher’s Panel featuring representatives from Cambridge University Press, Wiley, and the American Chemical Society.
Damian Pattinson, Vice President of Publishing Innovation at Research Square, described the goals of the event and how those goals align with Research Square’s mission, “Research Square has a long and rich history innovating in the peer review space, first with Rubriq and more recently with our Sound Science Assessments and upcoming Open Peer Review Platform. We wanted to celebrate the diversity of our own peer review community whilst also demonstrating the growing diversity in peer review offerings, from the many varieties of open peer review to different rewards for reviewers.”
Research Square’s Open Peer Review platform will allow researchers to read papers while they are under consideration at top journals. Readers can view and comment on papers under consideration at participating journals, while watching the peer review process unfold in real time through posted reviews and decision letters.
