We reported a patient with metastatic colon cancer after laparoscopic radical resection of the right colon cancer who received chemotherapy for 8 months long, added with TCM treatment and finally was cured. There was no aggravation at the subsequent follow-up. Because after 7months treatment enteroscope showed that the anastomotic stoma of transverse colon was smooth completely, we believed that TCM can provide a new thought of treating colon cancer after surgery.
To date, the recommended treatment of colon cancer is to resect cancerous areas and to advise patients to accept adjuvant chemotherapy, palliative chemotherapy, or palliative targeted therapy. (Banerjee et al., 2017; Ku et al., 2012) The current management of disseminated metastatic colon cancer involves various active drugs, either in combination or as single agents: 5-FU/leucovorin (LV), capecitabine, irinotecan, oxaliplatin, bevacizumab, cetuximab, panitumumab, ziv-aflibercept, ramucirumab, regorafenib, trifluridine-tipiracil, pembrolizumab, and nivolumab(A. B. Benson, 3rd et al., 2017). Personalizing treatment allows patients to maximize benefits while minimizing harms, thus providing optimal survival and quality of life(A. B. Benson et al., 2018). Most patients have good curative effect and a good long-term survival rate. On one hand, it is reported that although about 10.8% patients undergoing colectomy for colon cancer have metastatic disease, a number of the patients who underwent resection have an increased mortality and morbidity.(Moghadamyeghaneh et al., 2016) On the other hand, it seems that combination chemotherapy provides additional toxicity, which is harmful for patients.(Meyers, Cosby, Quereshy, & Jonker, 2017)
In this case, our treatment aimed to remove the hidden danger of metastatic colon cancer in pelvic, reduce the liver toxicity caused by chemotherapy, and improve the quality of life of patients. This prescription may be exerted through the dispelling cold, removing dampness, reducing phlegm, resolving masses, and detoxifying effects of TCM.
There are several limitations to this report that prevent drawing strong conclusions. Firstly, it is only a case report, so the evidence level of this treatment approach is very limited. We don’t know if the therapy is suitable for other people or other situations. When treating patients similar with the one in this case, we can adjust the prescription slightly according to their different conditions. Secondly, the follow-up period is a little bit short. Therefore, a long-term follow-up should be built up to confirm the clinical validity after the consistently treatment of TCM.
Overall, TMC can provide an effective way in the process of metastatic colon cancer. It is meaningful and imperative to share our successful experience of curing metastatic colon cancer after the Laparoscopic radical resection of colon cancer using TCM. Further investigations are expected to confirm the efficacy and mechanism of TCM treatments for colon cancer.
