Fewer U.S. dermatologists are accepting Medicaid plans over time. We sought to investigate whether there are discrepancies between Accountable Care Organization (ACO) webpage-reported dermatologist acceptance of Medicaid vs. actual acceptance of Medicaid via telephone calls to dermatology offices in Utah. Telephone calls were placed to each dermatology office in Utah posing as a patient requesting an appointment. We compared the information obtained over the phone with the ACO webpage and calculated wait time averages for appointments. The positive predictive values ranged from 83.1–95.5% depending on the ACO. *We also discovered that ACO webpages failed to list several dermatologists as accepting Medicaid who reported Medicaid acceptance on the telephone. We also compared waiting times for new patients with Medicaid to those with the leading medical insurance in Utah and found that the mean waiting time for adults with private insurance (3.0 days) was significantly shorter (p = 0.02) than adults with Medicaid (13.5 days) when the patient requested to be seen by a Physician Associate or Nurse Practitioner. For accurate information, Medicaid patients seeking dermatologic care should make telephone calls to local dermatology offices, rather than search for a Medicaid-listed provider on ACO webpages.
