The concept of evolutionary computation in computational science was taken from the natural process of biological evolution, and this further led to the development of more advanced evolutionary algorithms to optimise complex problems. It is known that recycling and reusing help increase any organisation’s profit and take away environmental burdens. In this research work, we use a genetic algorithm, one such evolutionary algorithm, to find a solution to a mathematically modelled complex transportation network and efficiently manage the reverse flow of used vehicle parts. The model was developed only after considering all processes that affect the management of the reverse flow network. The research work aided in identifying the needful amount of facilities to efficiently handle the reverse flow of materials and parts. The results indicate that the mathematical model can be efficiently used to manage the reverse flow of materials and used components, thereby improving recycling efficiency in the application domain.
