Despite the economic and ecological status of the European eel Anguilla anguilla throughout the North African coasts, this species remains little known. This study aims to provide information on the trophic habits of the fraction of the population that occupies Tonga Lake, a wetland located in Algeria extreme East. During one year (January - December 2009), a total of 477 eels (26<TL<73.3 cm; 30<TW<710 g), were sampled. Qualitative and quantitative diet variation was analyzed by season and development stage. Diet variations showed that the annual average value of digestive vacuity is 60.17%. During study period, nutritional activity is significantly highlighted depending on the seasons, which is not the case for silvering stages. This carnivorous predator feeds mainly on Actinopterygii fish (96.55%) and rarely on arthropods (arachnids, insects, chilopods), annelids, plants, gastropod mollusks and nematodes.
